SCHOOL ARRIVAL TIME

We are unable to provide Homework Café this year.  The ms/hs bus will pick up elementary students on Mondays and Thursdays for Chorus/Tuesdays and Fridays for Band only. 

Breakfast is served starting at 8:20 a.m. and concluding at 8:50 a.m. (unless there are late buses). Teachers are prepared to greet students starting at 8:30 a.m. in their classrooms. Students will be marked tardy if they are not in their classrooms by 8:55 a.m.

CLASSROOM VISITS

You can always schedule a visitation within a 24 hour advance notice. Thank you, too, for understanding that notice is required to allow teachers an awareness of the topic to best prepare to respond and to arrange logistically, including the setting and possible coverage for a teacher.

 

Continued thanks for understanding our policy to sign in again at the office, report to an office staff member where you are expected, remaining in those areas, and signing out. This helps us keep track of visitors in the event of safety concerns and allows students and staff to stay on task. Getting on task is only the beginning, s-t-a-y-i-n-g on task is critical.


PARENTS and HOMEWORK

Teachers prepare your child to return home each evening with a homework folder and weekly agenda. For best results, please review this with them as early as possible to best plan for its completion. The ultimate goal is to have your child independently organize, complete, and return homework. This requires our support at lessening levels.

 

Review the folder, plan a timeline, identify a quiet location, and decide on what works best for your child. Play, homework, break, homework? Homework, play, homework? Check of completed work, enjoy the sense of accomplishment, and lastly, put the folder in a place it can’t be forgotten on the way to school.

FAMILIES AND SCHOOL, ONE TEAM
Teamwork between home and school is vital to the success of our elementary school. We believe that it takes all of us, with our multiple skills, personalities, strengths and weaknesses, working together as a team to provide and produce the most effective educational experience to meet the needs of all of our children.

To help ensure the proper chain of command, please post the communication guideline that is included in this mailing by your phone. To re-cap, please call or email your child's teacher immediately with any questions or concerns so they may work with you prior to administrative involvement. The teacher should always be your first communication prior to contacting administration. If there is a concern regarding transportation, please call the Transportation Supervisor, Mrs. Lynn Bradley, at 639-1051.  If needed, she will contact me, and we will work together to address any bus related concerns. If there are Special Education, IEP, 504, O.T., P.T., Speech, or counseling concerns, please contact our Chairperson of Special Education at 639-8242.  If needed, the CSE Chairperson will contact me, and we will work together to address any concerns that you may have. 

 

 How can I get information about school events and programs? 

  • Elementary Newsletters - will be sent home the first and third Fridays of each month.  Your child will also receive a Friday Folder that should come home every Friday with important letters, announcements and your child’s schoolwork.
  • ACS website:  www.aftoncsd.org
  • Afton Elementary Student Handbook - this will be sent home with your child the first week of school.

What if my child is absent?

  • Be sure to call the health office at 639-8212 to report your child’s absence.  Students must report to the health office the first day back after any absence, whether they have remembered their excuse or not.  Please send in an excuse with your child the first day after any absence. 

What if I need to change my child’s transportation arrangement?

Daily Change: Either send a note with your child in the morning or call the office at 639-8234 by 2:00 p.m. to inform us of alternate transportation arrangements.  No changes will be accepted after the 2:00 p.m. deadline.

  • Permanent Change:  Call or e-mail Mrs. Bradley, Transportation Supervisor, at 639-1051/ lbradley@aftoncsd.org.

When does our school day begin and end?

  • Our school day starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m.  Students that walk or arrive at school with parents/guardians are not permitted in the building until 8:30 a.m.  Students that ride the bus will have supervision in the morning room (elementary cafeteria) as buses arrive.  Students are not permitted to go to their classrooms until 8:55 a.m.  Students arriving in classrooms after 8:55 a.m. will be marked tardy. Students leaving prior to 3:20 p.m. will be marked as an early departure.  For attendance purposes, three tardies/early departures equal one absence.
  • Students are called to buses starting at 3:15 p.m. 
  • IMPORTANT CHANGE for parent pick up.  Parents picking up their children will be doing so at the parent pick up location located in the ms/hs cafeteria.  You must send in a note or call before 2:00 p.m. to make ant changes.  No children will be permitted to be picked up in the bus loop at dismissal.
