Afton has a call for celebration

Beats Hancock, 55-54, after last-second shot ruled inside the arc

Staff Report

HARPURSVILLE — Hancock's Kym Wood banked in a long-range jumper from the wing with three seconds left that was ruled to be inside the 3-point arc as Afton escaped with a 55-54 first-round victory in the Section Four Class D tournament Tuesday.

"That's the only shame," Afton coach John Simonds said of the disputed call at the end. "The ref was watching the line, but it was a shame it had to end like that. It was a great game. Both teams played well."

Libby Winn's 3-pointer for Hancock with about 20 seconds left pulled the Wildcats within 54-52.

The Indians, who play at top seeded Odessa-Montour on Friday, took a 55-52 lead on a free throw by Brandy Jennings with nine seconds left.

Renee Kemmerer, whose 3-pointer early in the fourth period gave the Indians the lead for keeps at 43-40, had a game-high 16 points and added six steals and three assists. Teammate Crystal Simonds had 14 points, 12 rebounds and four steals.

Winn and Mindy Macrabie had 14 points apiece for Hancock, which went 5-for-19 at the free throw line.
