Afton pair leads field hockey all-state picks

FROM STAFF REPORTS

After leading Afton to the NYSPHSAA Class D field hockey title earlier this month, goalie Christina Kirkaldy and midfielder Kristine Kelly were named all-state selections.

Also among the 10 players selected from Section 4 were Whitney Point senior attackers Ashley Ostrander and Amber Wade, who helped their team to a state final for the second year in a row.

Ostrander, who led the team with 19 goals, was named an all-state player for the third straight time. Oxford's senior attacker Adrienne Monaco and junior attacker Tiffany Marsh, the only player selected from Marathon, were also repeat selections.

Senior attacker Brooke Aldrich from Oxford, Spencer-Van Etten's senior attacker Karin Grap, senior midfielder Kelly Cooman from Sherburne-Earlville and Greene's senior attacker Lisa Craver were also selected.

There is only one all-state field hockey team, according to Afton coach Jan Conover, the Section 4 field hockey chairman.

An honorary State Player certificate was awarded posthumously to Joelle Robinson, a Tioga junior who was killed in a car accident on Nov. 3.

Binghamton Press article about the game:

Afton made the most of its first berth in the NYSPHSAA field hockey tournament final, steamrolling Barker, 5-1, to claim the Class D title Sunday at P&C Stadium in Syracuse.

The Indians (19-4) topped Fort Ann, 2-1, in Saturday's semifinal.

Afton held a 3-0 lead at halftime of the final, scoring on three of the team's eight penalty corners in the first half. Renee Kemmerer opened the scoring 50 seconds into the game, when she knocked in a penalty corner by Kris Kelly that hit off the goalie's pads. Liz Akshar scored the first of her two goals with about 17 minutes left, knocking in another corner by Kelly, who scored off yet another corner about 10 minutes later. Kelly has a team-high 17 goals.

Section 6 champion Barker (13-2) was held to one shot in the first half.

"Our defense was strong, but the offense and the midfielders just didn't let the ball get back there," Afton coach Jan Conover said."

Alicia Kenyon scored for Barker to cut the lead to 3-1 about 12 minutes into the second half. Akshar scored again about eight minutes later, and Kemmerer scored off Afton's 10th corner of the game for the final margin with about five minutes left.

Ashley Sherman, who scored in the Indians' semifinal win, jammed her shoulder on a play with about 10 minutes left. After the game, she was taken to a local hospital for X-rays, Conover said.

Brigette Hansen scored her 16th goal of the season in the semifinal.

"Not just one person does it," Conover said. "With my team, everybody contributes and anyone at any time is dangerous."

Sherman, Kelly and goalie Kristina Kirkaldy were named to the all-tournament team. Kirkaldy had five saves.

Afton's Danielle Dutton earned a sportsmanship award, which is presented to one player on each team.
