Mock Trial is an organization in which students prepare and enact an actual trial. Students take turns as actual attorneys and witnessess in a case which is supplied to them. Students meet on a regular basis after school and in their spare time to practice. Inter-school competitions are then held to determine eight county wide champions and then an overall regional championship team that advances to the state final in Albany. New York's Annual Statewide Mock Trial Tournament is sponsored by ther New York State Bar Association's Committee on Citizenship Education, The New York State Bar Foundation, and county bar associations throughout New York State. The goals of the tournament are as follows: To further understanding of the law, court procedures and our legal system; to increase proficiency in basic life skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and reasoning; to promote better communication and cooperation between the school community, including teachers and students, and the legal profession; and, to heighten appreciation for academic studies in general and law-related careers in particular.
