Sertoma Essay Winners

On April 22, 2008 students from Afton Central School and Harpursville School were recognized at a dessert party provided by Sertoma. The students were the winners of an essay contest held annually by the Sertoma Club, a national service organization whose motto is “Service to Mankind”. The students wrote on the topic of “Rights and the Responsibilities “. Each student interpreted the topic and wrote about how it applies to American citizens. Each winner received a savings bond from NBT.

1st place- Rebekah Prezorski who wrote on the topic of Freedom of Speech, and its origin in the Bill of Rights. She told why it was included in the Bill of Rights and its importance today. She informed her listeners that journalists still fight today to keep the sources of their information confidential, and some are willing to go to jail to protect those sources.

2nd place was won by Jessie Bullis who wrote on the topic of the responsible use of alcohol. She told of the historical conflict surrounding the use of alcohol. She gave evidence of this conflict by including information on the 18th amendment prohibiting the consumption of alcohol, and the 21st amendment which repealed the prohibition.

Jackie Iaia won 3rd place with her essay on the responsible use of alcohol. She suggested ways to use alcohol responsibly, and the consequences of the irresponsible use of alcohol. She gave suggestions of how to reduce intoxication, and ways to keep intoxicated individuals from driving drunk. She reminded her listeners that the lawful use of alcohol is each individual’s responsibility.

Afton Students Exhibit at 2nd Annual Jericho Arts Council Student Show

Mr. Lynch's 7th Grade Health Students Create Anti-Tobacco Ads for WACS-TV.

Seniors Jennifer Woodruff (center) and Rachel DeVona (right) were among ten area art students selected by their teachers to exhibit works at the Town Hall's Upstairs Gallery in Bainbridge.

Each artist exhibited five pieces of work selected with the guidance of their art teacher, Scott Higby (left).

Along with the artwork, the students prepared statements about their work, the artistic process, and plans for the future.

Both Jennifer and Rachel will be pursuing art studies in college.

Seventh grade Health students in Mr. Lynch's class pooled their creativity, prepared scripts, then shot and edited video to create seven ads to be shown on the school's WACS-TV morning announcements.

Filmed quickly and efficiently, often out of sequence, the ads were edited using iMovie with the help of Mr. DeVona, the M/H librarian.

In the coming weeks, look for links to streaming video versions of these films on the Student Projects page of this site.

Grandparents' Day

Grandparents’ Day, a Celebration of Family, was held on November 20, 2007. Students and staff in grades K-5 worked as a team to provide this incredible program. Kindergarten, First and Second grade students performed poems and songs. Third graders made flowers for our visitors. Fourth grade students provided decorations and served as greeters and Fifth grade students designed the program.

The elementary band and chorus performed under the direction of Mr. Chris Luttinger and Mr. Thom Bittner. A slide show was presented depicting typical elementary happenings. We thank Mrs. Michelle Howard and Mrs. Stacey Gridley for taking photos and putting this slide show together. The program ended with a sing-a-long led by our music teacher, Mr. Thom Bittner.

A great time was had by all. What a wonderful way to show our appreciation for family!

A Passion for Nature

Mr. Sy Lloyd, a resident of Otego, met with middle and high school students to share his lifetime interest in wildlife and nature. Mr. Lloyd is known throughout New York State at the "Bone Man." He ingeniously reconstructs the wildlife skeletons brought to him by the DEC for displays in various college and environmental collections. Even more compelling is how he reconstructs the lives and environment of each specimen through his vast knowledge, his captivating storytelling, and his earnest love for his work!
