Crimson Knights Update

The fall season is almost completed. The first year of our merged teams – football, soccer, and cross country were very successful. While the varsity soccer team was winless, they improved with every game.

The football team finished the regular season with a 4-3 record and will play in a sectional game at Unatego at 7:00 p.m. Friday night.

Our cross country team has been very successful. The Sectional Qualifier at Chenango Valley State Park is coming up on Thursday, October 30th, and we have some strong runners looking for a great finish to give them an opportunity to continue on to the State Finals at Canton.

Volleyball finished with a 3-8 record. They will be participating in the Mini-Mack tournament at Greene tonight.

The field hockey team ended their regular season with an 11-5 record. They will play their first sectional game against Windsor Wednesday night, October 22nd. The winner of that game will play the #1 seed, Whitney Point, next Tuesday at Whitney Point.

Modified soccer will be playing their last home game on Thursday night.

The winter sports season will begin on Monday, November 3rd. The girls’ varsity basketball team will have a new coach with Lacy Stanton. Marie Loher, our new elementary counselor, will take over the JV girls’ basketball team. The boys’ will be led again by Dick Winans and Trevor Beames.

The bowling team (Cathy Decker) and indoor track will be combined with Harpursville while wrestling (Brandon MacNaught) will combine with Harpursville and Bainbridge.

Modified A football started the season with over 40 students on the combined Harpursville-Afton roster.  Throughout the season they have played games of various length to help develop athletes as well as accommodate competitor’s needs.  The combined Hornet team has only come up short once after six contests.  Still left in the season are scrimmages against Walton and Chenango Forks and games against U.V. and Seton Catholic Central. Coach Garlitz has also been successful in his efforts to teach valuable attitudes and skills to many children in the Afton and Harpursville Districts.

The combined school, co-ed, Afton-Harpursville modified A soccer team has enjoyed a great season this year while playing in the boys’ league.  While combining the two schools and two genders into one solid team, the players also learned the importance of learning new skills, enjoying each other’s company, and good sportsmanship. They tallied nearly 100 offside traps on their opponents, developed more than 7 players into quality goalkeepers, and came away with the desire to stay bonded together as a team – and as new friends – even after the season is over.  Led by Coaches Fedor, Giblin, and Ward, the team shows great promise for a bright future for our soccer program.

We look forward to an exciting season!
