Rachel's Challenge Chain Reaction Program

Dear Parents/Guardians:

It is our pleasure to announce that on February 3-5, we will be bringing the Rachel’s Challenge Chain Reaction program back to Afton Central School.  As you may recall, Rachel’s Challenge came to Afton several years ago to present a powerful program to all of our students and the community centering around kindness and compassion.  The follow-up Chain Reaction program seeks to engage students in an experiential learning process aimed at eliminating teasing, violence, and all forms of oppression.  The program also addresses issues of peer pressure, conflict management, harassment, and depression.  The goal of the program is to unite and empower students and adults in the school community to positively impact the culture of the school.

The 7th and 8th grades will participate in the program on Tuesday, February 3rd, 9th and 10th grades on Wednesday, February 4th, and 11th and 12th grades on Thursday, February 5th.  During the program, students are given several opportunities to speak out about what is really going on for them and what support they need from each other.  The program focuses mainly on school/community concerns, but individual students can, and often do, share personal difficulties and experiences with the group.  The process of sharing is often both empowering and emotional.  Confidentiality is stressed for the group, but can never be guaranteed, as we will be working with a large group of students.

At the conclusion of the program, our hope is that the majority of the students leave feeling bonded, empowered, and committed to making a positive difference in the school community.  We would also encourage you to discuss the program with your child after they participate.

The program is planned for all students in the grade levels listed above, and regular classes for these students will not be running that day.  If you have questions about the program or would not like your child to participate, please contact the Guidance Office at (607) 639-8240 by Wednesday, January 28th.

Sincerely,

Dave Glover
